Proverbs 1:8-9
“My son, hear the instruction of your father, And do not forsake the law of your mother; For they will be a graceful ornament on your head,And chains about your neck.”
This morning, my mind was flooded with quotes and colloquialisms that Mom and Dad have shared with me throughout the years. Several began to immediately surface as I thought about the instruction of my father and the law of my mother:
Instruction of my father
“Life is something that happens while you’re making other plans.”
“You gotta know who you are, where you came from and where you’re going.”
“Sin is like cancer; your scope of deception gets bigger and bigger and bigger.”
“The joy of life is taking time for yourself; that’s good for the soul.”
Law of my mother
“What you don’t use, you’ll lose.”
“You weave your tapestry wherever you are.”
“Moral corruption cracks a foundation.”
“Music is generational and music tells the tales of the times.”
Their influence has been monumental in my development, not only as a child but also as an adult. Their support, discipline and encouragement have guided me through life. I hope my ears don’t grow deaf to their teaching and instruction that I may exhibit their wisdom and one day adorn myself in beads of grace (Proverb 1:9). Beyond that I hope to preserve their legacy to gift, one day, to the next generation.
