Proverb 1:13
“We shall find all kinds of precious possessions,
We shall fill our houses with spoil;”
Sin’s promise to satisfy is an empty one. It always tricks us into succumbing to the pleasure and ignoring the consequence with an illusion. The enticement of sin will promise all sorts of pleasures and solutions. It will suggest that we will never again have to worry about that ever-present void in our heart. Sin masks itself as money to a debtor; companionship to the lonely; healing to the wounded; a thrill to the bored; rest to the fatigued; freedom to the enslaved; relief to the worried; satisfaction to the unsatisfied.
But if the word is written on our hearts, we know a masquerade when we show up at one. It’s a trap that ensnares us to an addictive appetite for more. We understand that we are enticed by our own desires, that our desires conceive and give birth to sin, and that sin brings forth death (James 1:15)
Sin comes in the very form of that thing that we crave. It looks good. It smells good. It tastes good. We think it will satisfy our ravenous appetite for whatever it is we desire.
When we taste it, contrary to our expectation, our appetite grows. Our cravings intensify and we never experience the satisfaction we seek in our sinful endeavors.
Sin is never as luxurious as it seems before we commit to it. But it will always approach us with the lie that it is.
